Difficulty focusing, staying organized, managing time, or completing everyday tasks can affect nearly every aspect of life. While many people occasionally become distracted, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can significantly impact work, relationships, education, and daily responsibilities. At Harborline Psychiatry, we provide comprehensive evaluations and individualized treatment plans to help adults better understand their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Understanding Adult ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, executive functioning, organization, and impulse control. Although ADHD begins during childhood, many individuals are not diagnosed until adulthood when increasing responsibilities make symptoms more noticeable.

Adult ADHD is often misunderstood. Rather than simply being "easily distracted," many people experience difficulty prioritizing tasks, managing time, regulating emotions, remembering important details, or maintaining focus on activities that are not immediately engaging.

ADHD commonly occurs alongside anxiety disorders, depression, sleep disorders, and other psychiatric conditions. Because these conditions can share similar symptoms, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is important to ensure an accurate diagnosis and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of ADHD vary from person to person but may include:

• Difficulty maintaining attention

• Becoming easily distracted

• Frequently misplacing important items

• Trouble organizing tasks or responsibilities

• Difficulty completing projects

• Poor time management

• Forgetfulness in daily activities

• Restlessness or feeling internally "driven"

• Difficulty remaining seated for long periods

• Interrupting conversations or speaking impulsively

• Acting before fully considering consequences

• Emotional frustration related to chronic disorganization

Symptoms may range from mild to severe and often become more noticeable as work, family, or personal responsibilities increase.

When to seek help

A professional evaluation may be beneficial if attention or organizational difficulties:

• Interfere with work or academic performance

• Affect relationships or family life

• Make it difficult to manage everyday responsibilities

• Lead to chronic stress or frustration

• Have been present since childhood, even if never formally diagnosed

• Continue despite efforts to improve organization or productivity

Many adults are diagnosed later in life after recognizing longstanding patterns that were previously attributed to personality or stress. An evaluation can help determine whether ADHD or another condition may be contributing to your symptoms.
