Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling rested can affect nearly every aspect of daily life. Poor sleep may contribute to changes in mood, concentration, energy, and overall well-being. At Harborline Psychiatry, we recognize that sleep concerns are often connected to underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or ADHD. Through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, we work with you to understand the factors affecting your sleep and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Understanding Insomnia and Sleep Difficulties

Sleep is essential for both physical and mental health. When sleep becomes consistently disrupted, it can interfere with concentration, emotional regulation, work performance, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep concerns and may involve difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night, waking earlier than intended, or feeling unrested despite spending adequate time in bed.

Sleep difficulties can occur on their own but are frequently associated with anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD, chronic stress, certain medications, medical conditions, or lifestyle factors. Because many different factors can contribute to poor sleep, a comprehensive evaluation is important to identify the underlying causes and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Common signs and symptoms

Sleep difficulties may present in a variety of ways, including:

• Difficulty falling asleep

• Waking frequently during the night

• Waking too early and being unable to return to sleep

• Feeling unrefreshed despite adequate time in bed

• Daytime fatigue or low energy

• Difficulty concentrating

• Memory problems

• Irritability

• Increased anxiety related to sleep

• Reduced motivation or productivity

• Feeling sleepy during the day

Symptoms may develop gradually or appear during periods of increased stress, life changes, or worsening mental health symptoms.

When to seek help

A psychiatric evaluation may be helpful if sleep difficulties:

• Occur several nights each week

• Continue for several weeks or longer

• Affect work, school, or daily responsibilities

• Contribute to anxiety, depression, or mood changes

• Persist despite good sleep habits

• Cause excessive daytime fatigue or difficulty functioning

If your sleep concerns are accompanied by loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, unusual nighttime behaviors, or significant daytime sleepiness, additional medical evaluation or referral to a sleep specialist may also be appropriate.
